Inserting Quotations

Students are nearly always encouraged to write their reports and essays in their own words. However, the use of quotations is often unavoidable when one wants to make a specific point that has already been expressed very clearly by someone else. In LabWriteUp you can insert a quotation by clicking on the Quotation button and typing in the detaisl. LabWriteUp will ensure that your quotation is properly formatted in the final report.

Quotations are formatted in two different ways depending upon their length. In the example below the quotation is 19 words long:

The quote is inserted in quotation marks and the author, year, and page number are shown in brackets. If the citation is in the reference database then it will be added to the references list:

When a quotation has more than 40 words, it is treated differently, as in the following example:

Some students are tempted to use quotations throughout their reports. However, unless you are analysing text (and hence quoting it), it is wise to avoid over use of quotations and limit thier use to no more than three. LabWriteUp will warn you about this if you use too many quotations. The point is that the text you write should be your own words.
