Paired t Test

When the paired t test is selected, you are presented with a list of the variables and their levels (if there are many variables). In the above mood induction example where mood is measured before and after induction, the IV is mood induction and the levels are pre-induction and post-induction, and the DV is mood rating. Once the levels have been selected, you will then be required to enter the level of statistical significance obtained in the test.

You may enter a significance value (e.g., .000) directly or select one of the significance levels, ranging from 'p > .05' to 'p < .001'. You should also enter the degrees of freedom and/or the number of participants (if one is missing, LabWriteUp will calculate the one based on the other).

Next, click 'OK' to generate a description of the test. You should check and edit this text here if necessary.

Click the 'Next' button to continue. When you do this the following window appears:

For this test, the t statistic is computed, so enter that value, as well as the means and standard deviations for each condition. You can also compute an effect size (Cohen's d) and LabWriteUp will offer an interpretation for this particular value of d. When these selections have been made, click 'Save and Preview' to examine the textual description of the analysis. In this example the description is:

If you want to plot the means on a graph, select 'Plot This'. The plot is created automatically and you can make some changes to it, such as the text for the labels and thte title. An alternative to plotting the data is to create a table. By clicking on the 'Table This' button, LabWriteUp will create the table automatically and open it your word processor.

Note that SPSS sometimes shows the p value ('Sig.') as .000. Strictly speaking, it is impossible to obtain a p value of 0. However, SPSS rounds to three decimal places, so if the calculated significance is .0002345 then it displayes the value .000. If you enter .000 as the signifcance level, LabWriteUp interprets it as .0004, so then the significance is displayed as p < .001.
