Mann-Whitney U Test

When this test is selected, you are presented with a list (if there are many variables) to select the levels of comparison. In the above example, the IV is response type and the levels are recollection and familiarity, and the DV is mean recognition score. Once the levels have been selected, you will then be required to enter the level of statistical significance obtained in the test.

You may enter a value (e.g., .000) or select one of the significance levels, ranging from 'p > .05' to 'p < .001'.

Next, click 'OK' to generate a description of the test. You should check and edit this text here if necessary.

Click the 'Next' button to continue. When you do this the following window appears:

For this test, a U statistic is computed, so enter that value, as well as the number of participants in each group (Na and Nb). Next, make the selections relating to which group got the higher ranks and hence the higher score on the DV. When these selections have been made, click 'Save and Preview' to examine the textual description of the analysis. In this example the description is:

Next >> Independent t Test

The Mann-Whitney U test is used when the data is ordinal or interval, when you are looking to test for differences, and when your design is independent measures (e.g., you have two groups of participants).
