Use of Linking Words and Phrases

An important aspect of report writing is effective communication. Primarily, effective comminucation involves trying to express the points, arguments, and information in clear and unabiguous ways. However, it also involves trying to impress upon the reader the purpose of the study. Thus, a report should be coherent, be flowing, and be interesting to the reader.

Reports that do not do this can be identified by the fact that almost every paragraph in the introduction starts with a reference. Hence the report reads like a list of points and the purpose and clarity can become obscured.

One way to liven up a report is to use words and phrases that link points in a meaningful and purposeful way. LabWriteUp comes with a set of such words and phrases, categorised by how the ponits are to be linked. These categories are shown in the screen shot below.

It is easy to add a link word or phrase into your text.

Some students are tempted to use quotations throughout their reports. However, unless you are analysing text (and hence quoting it), it is wise to avoid over use of quotations and limit thier use to no more than three. LabWriteUp will warn you about this if you use too many quotations. The point is that the text you write should be your own words.
